Why We Built the Korean Synthetic Consumer Studio: Grounding Korean Synthetic Persona & Data in 5 Years of Empirical Fieldwork

🚀 Launch the Live Korean Synthetic Consumer Studio

Experience 30 4D Qualitative Korean Synthetic Personas (15M / 15F) and a 120-Member Quantitative Survey Simulator (N=120) with instant 5-language switching (KO · EN · JA · ZH · ID).

When global consumer brands, gaming studios, and product teams prepare to enter or expand in South Korea, they almost always encounter the same dilemma before fieldwork begins: How can we stress-test our product concepts, KRW price thresholds, and interview guides with realistic Korean consumers before committing weeks and tens of thousands of dollars to on-site recruiting?

To solve this challenge, Direct Research Korea (DRK) built and launched the Korean Synthetic Consumer Studio (https://www.thedrk.com/portfolio/KoreanPersona/) — South Korea's first interactive Korean synthetic persona and Korean synthetic data web platform grounded in five years (2021–2026) of real empirical Focus Group Discussion (FGD), In-Depth Interview (IDI), and Central Location Test (CLT) fieldwork data.

1. Why We Built It: The 3 Bottlenecks of Traditional & Generic AI Research in Korea

Over the past decade of moderating hundreds of consumer and UX studies in Seoul and Sejong, our research team identified three structural pain points that global and domestic teams face:

  • 1) Generic LLMs Fail at Korean Socio-Economic Nuance: Asking a generic off-the-shelf AI model to "act like a 30-something Korean consumer" produces flat, stereotypical translations. Generic prompts do not understand the sharp behavioral divide between a SEC B single-person household in Mapo-gu (balancing Coupang Rocket Fresh subscriptions with clinical pet-care spending) and a SEC A dual-income working mother in Songpa-gu (prioritizing 10-minute premium meal-kits and educational apps).
  • 2) High Opportunity Cost of Unvalidated Pre-Fieldwork Hypotheses: Going straight into offline FGDs or large-scale quantitative panels without pre-screening messaging hooks or price-elasticity thresholds often burns 40% of moderation time on basic assumptions that could have been refined beforehand.
  • 3) Cross-Border Language & Alignment Friction: Regional APAC and global stakeholders in the US, Europe, Japan, China, and Indonesia frequently struggle to review Korean screener profiles simultaneously in their own language before signing off on fieldwork criteria.

Our answer was clear: Rather than relying on ungrounded prompts, we engineered a structured 4D Korean Synthetic Persona & Data Engine anchored directly in DRK's anonymized 2021–2026 empirical participant database across 11 major Korean consumer verticals (Beauty, F&B, Gaming, Home Appliances, Pet Care, Mobility, Finance, Education, Healthcare, Retail, and Travel).

2. Inside the Studio: 30 4D Qualitative Personas & Instant 5-Language Toggle (KO · EN · JA · ZH · ID)

In Mode 1 (Qualitative Persona & Mini-FGD Lab) at https://www.thedrk.com/portfolio/KoreanPersona/, researchers can filter and interview 30 balanced Korean synthetic personas (F01–F15 Female, M01–M15 Male) spanning ages 20s to 50s and Korean Household Income Socio-Economic Classifications (SEC A+, A, B+, B, C1, C2, D).

Figure 2. Direct Screenshot of the 30 Qualitative Persona Screener Cards (F01–F15 / M01–M15) displaying age, SEC household income tier, occupation, family life-stage, and actual brand/category repertoires.

Right next to the studio title, the interactive KO · EN · JA · ZH · ID language toggle bar dynamically switches all 30 persona cards—including names, occupations, household structures, brand repertoires, and interview responses—into Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, or Indonesian with zero page reload. Teams can conduct 1:1 In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) or assemble up to 4 personas for a Multi-Persona Mini-FGD using either the built-in deterministic simulation engine, a local LLM via Ollama (e.g., Qwen 2.5, Llama 3.1), or cloud LLM APIs.

3. Mode 2 & Mode 3: 120-Member Quantitative Survey Lab & Hybrid Fieldwork Bridge

Qualitative depth is only half of the pre-fieldwork equation. Stakeholders also need directional quantitative numbers to test price sensitivity and Top-2-Box purchase intent across segments.

Figure 3. UI Capture of Mode 2 (120-Member Stratified Korean Quantitative Panel Simulator with SEC Income Tier & Age×Gender Crosstabs) and Mode 3 (Hybrid Validation Bridge).
  • Mode 2 — 120-Member Stratified Quantitative Survey Simulator (N=120): Deploy custom 5-point Likert concepts and price-point tests across 120 synthetic Korean panelists stratified by gender (60M / 60F), age cohort (20s–50s), and SEC income tiers. Instantly inspect Top-2-Box conversion rates, price-elasticity drop-off points, and download the full N=120 respondent-level dataset as a CSV.
  • Mode 3 — Executive Report Studio & Hybrid Validation Bridge: Automatically synthesize qualitative quotes and quantitative crosstabs into an executive diagnostic report—complete with an actionable FGD Discussion Guide and Target Recruitment Screener ready for real human validation at DRK's Gangnam and Sejong research facilities.

4. How Global Teams Use the Studio (Hybrid Research Workflow)

At Direct Research Korea, we view Korean synthetic data not as a replacement for human empathy, but as a high-speed Pre-Fieldwork Accelerator:

  1. Step 1 (Day 1 — Hypothesis & Price Pre-Testing): Test 3–5 early product concepts or price tiers on https://www.thedrk.com/portfolio/KoreanPersona/ across 30 personas and the N=120 quantitative panel to eliminate weak concepts early.
  2. Step 2 (Day 2 — Screener & Discussion Guide Optimization): Identify which Korean SEC income tier and age cohort exhibits the highest friction or highest conversion potential, and export the Mode 3 Discussion Guide.
  3. Step 3 (Week 2–3 — Real Human Fieldwork in Seoul): Recruit the exact target segment validated in the studio for live, high-impact in-person FGDs, home visits, or usability testing with Direct Research Korea.
